A secret weapon in Luther's arsenal, is his pairing with one of my favorite bass players, Marcus Miller, who frequently collaborated with Luther on the songwriting through his career. Later his albums would be much more heavy on the ballad material over the uptempo and midtempo material but on this album the funky grooves take more of the album. A great dance album that closes with a pair of top notch ballads. Sugar And Spice (I Found Me A Girl) 4:58Ī stellar debut! The platinum streak began with this album that grooves real well. If anyone wishes to comment on the other projects, please feel free.Ģ. He had a lot of albums that he was involved with like Change and the band Luther as well as all of the guest appearances he made but for the purposes of this thread I am going to stick with his solo career that launched with 1981's Never Too Much. Even then he bounced back with a platinum self titled album and enjoyed some of his biggest success with 2003's Dance With My Father, issued in the wake of his devastating stroke. Since launching his solo career with 1981's Never Too Much, he didn't have an album that was considered an outright flop until 1998's I Know. There was a reason he was able to maintain that kind of track record while many other acts came and went he was that good. While he never really had a monster album in terms of sales, like a Dancing On The Ceiling or Purple Rain Soundtrack, his career was remarkably consistent in terms of his extremely long track record of platinum and double platinum albums. A talented producer, singer and songwriter he had an excellent solo career filled with top notch ballads and dance songs and most of his albums are remarkably consistent in how good they are. Luther Vandross is one of my favorite singers and even though he is no longer with us, I still find myself frequently pulling his albums out and listening to them. I've been meaning to do this thread for awhile.
